The story - Asta Bay
When a fire even lightly touches a solid rock, it marks the contact with the stone through dark traces of black soot and grey ashes. While the inner mass of the stone stay untouched by the burning flames, the surface surrender something of itself to the other element. It allows some of the fire to stay forever in contact with the stone structure. When the temple of marble in Efesos burned down to the ground, all that remained was the heavy blocks of marble that once stood arranged under the burned structure.

White stone with dark traces of light. I sometimes imagine myself walking around the remains of the ancient temple; I see faces in every heavy block of stone; in every trace of fire.
